Placement Discussion (Emily Campbell)

Placement Discussion
Emily Campbell

Today we discussed the areas we want to explore during this practice and placement module.
At the beginning we went around the table and said who we were and what we are working on in our studio, this was just giving Emily an insight into what we are looking at and researching.
After, we each told the group the different ideas we have for our placement, I had two ideas, one being an exhibition and getting more experience in curating and the other was to go back to college and try and bridge the gap between an A level and degree standard.
There were great pieces of advice given to me which I need to look at before I approach the school/college.
Some of these ideas are:

  • Think about what I am offering to the college students
  • Think about the language of art (come up with a project and think about how it makes you feel)
  • Think about how many visits/sessions I will need to complete the placement
  • Think about what materials I will need to take in
  • Think about coming up with a theme (in relation to my practice maybe going into different shops and what feelings you have when you enter)
  • Think about having an interactive lecture/PowerPoint (how to break tension and the lack of self-confidence)
  • Think about what type of visual outcomes there could be
  • Think about looking into the national curriculum and how to fit it in with the school system
  • Think about breaking it down into a day to day plan so it is simple to understand
  • Think about explaining that artwork doesn't have to be finished to be a piece of art (when is something called a piece of art, when is it finished?)

I was thinking about the structure while I was in the session and have came up with this:

1.    Introduce yourself and go around the group saying who each person is and what there area of interest is
2.    PowerPoint
3.    (Past) describe a piece of work to the best of your ability (Michael Branthwaite)
4.    (Present) look at work in progress and when do they think the work is finished
5.    (Future) Write a proposal for your next piece of artwork
6.    Group seminar
7.    Individual tutorials

(This schedule may change as I go along up to the placement itself)

I am going to look into all of these areas further so that when I wrote my proposal for the college it will be detailed with the exact information I want to present and what me and the college will get out of the placement.
